Our Short Green Updates are a quick look at a part of the Green World that could really take a few heavily researched blogs to discuss but frankly we do not have the time to do that so we'll give you some bits and pieces
Pollution in general and carbon dioxide polluting in specific is not really hard to track. The emitters can be found quite easily be it large industrial activity and the electricity generation required for that activity or the mass of millions of drivers around the world trying to lead their lives in a more productive way.
It is positive to see that the aggregate production of CO2 actually fell to it's lowest point since 1994.
The causes were mainly:
- Less coal used in electricity production
- More nat gas largely from hydraulic fracturing used in electricity production
- More renewables such as solar and wind used in electricity production
- More use of hybrid and plug-in automobiles
"Lisa Jacobson, president of the Business Council for Sustainable Energy, said the Bloomberg findings exposed the conservative argument that acting on climate change would be a drag on the economy. Instead, carbon emissions declined even as GDP was going up, she noted.
Another positive in man's war against his/her own expectorate is that China says it will begin to tax carbon pollution.
"China will proactively introduce a set of new taxation policies designed
to preserve the environment, including a tax on carbon dioxide
emissions, according to a senior official with the Ministry of Finance
"It will be the local taxation authority, rather than the environmental protection department, that will collect the taxes."
Of course China has been known to float large potential environmental saving strategies in the past that are then overlooked and not implemented but China must realize that it's horrible growing problems with pollution could lead to insurrection in areas most affected by the pollution. Sometimes people get so fed up that their reverence for the power of the state and it's police powers are forgotten in an attempt to better their own lives. China's government tries to stay away from rioting.
